First of all a few facts and figures about the two most spoken languages in the EU, namely German and English: · 16% of the EU population speak English as their mother tongue whereas · 24% of the EU population are native German speakers, and added to that 8% learn German as a foreign language. These figures show that anyone with a working knowledge of the German language can effectively reach 32% of EU-citizens. Apart from the obvious German-speaking countries in Europe (Austria, Germany, Switzerland), there are also pockets of German-speaking parts in Europe, for example in Denmark, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, in the Czech Republic and in Poland.
